José Carlos Capella, Guest of the Month for November

An Artistic Journey towards Innovation and Personal Expression

Today in our “Artist of the Month”, we have José Carlos Capella Conejo, an established Andalusian artist, passionate about color and symbolism, whose artistic interests go far beyond technique. His work combines vibrant colors and detailed designs with a deep exploration of mythology and history of ancient civilizations, especially Egypt and Mesopotamia. This approach has defined a unique style that brings mythological figures and natural elements to life, merging them into hypnotic and intriguing compositions. José Carlos takes us on a brief visual journey through legendary worlds, where color and culture converge.

CalleArte: What inspired you to become an artist?

José Carlos: I’ve been painting since I was 7 years old when my father gave me my first painter’s palette, which is still one of the ones I use, along with my first oil paints. That led me to experiment and was the best way to enhance the overflowing imagination I felt I had.

CalleArte: How would you describe your artistic style and what elements are recurrent in your work?

José Carlos: The most important aspect of my painting is undoubtedly color, which in recent years I have combined with my passion for history, mythology, and the art of ancient civilizations, achieving a very personal style full of details that give meaning to my painting.

CalleArte: What themes are you most passionate about and why?

José Carlos: The themes I like the most are mythological animals, inspired by Egypt and Mesopotamia, which, together with botanical elements, are something I’m passionate about to bring my works to life.

CalleArte: Can you tell us about the creative process behind one of your recent works?

José Carlos: At first, I like to imagine a theme and the size of the canvas I want to paint on, then I start to research and look for references. After that, I prepare ideas and numerous sketches, where I fit in the color I want for the character, background, floors, and different elements. Right now, I’m fully immersed in a series of 36 inspired by the Egyptian scarab beetle. I haven’t published anything on my social networks yet, but very soon I’ll start showing the process of all of them. And as I always say, when I paint a work, it first has to reach my heart, for a work to be liked by a collector or art lover.

CalleArte: What role do you think art plays in today’s society?

José Carlos: Art is a reflection of society; it provokes reflection, questions norms, and promotes creativity. Art is something that has moved the world since ancient times and will continue to do so.

CalleArte: Is there any artist or artistic movement that has particularly influenced you?

José Carlos: I feel very influenced by Naive art and by the artist Henri Rousseau, whose ability to create scenarios, landscapes with botanical references and characters, always inspires me in my painting, to explore my own imagination.

CalleArte: How do you feel about being selected as “Artist of the Month” at CalleArte?

José Carlos: I am deeply grateful and it’s something that gives great visibility to artists and encourages us to have the support of platforms that do so much for art and artists. This selection validates my work and motivates me to continue exploring and creating. It’s an honor to share my vision with more people. It’s very important for me as an artist because it allows more people to know my work, while at the same time I can add value and visibility to CalleArte.

CalleArte: What advice would you give to emerging artists who are seeking to make their way in the art world?

José Carlos: I would tell them to stay authentic, perseverant, and constant in their career as an artist, as that is what makes an artist become valued and collectors want to acquire their works. Above all, they should seek their own recognizable style. The path can be difficult, but passion and originality are fundamental to finding their voice and place in the art world.

CalleArte: Do you have any future projects you’re working on that you’re excited to share?

José Carlos: At the moment, I’m working on the Egyptian beetle series, as well as preparing new sketches for more large-scale works, specifically measuring 130×97 cm, which are the ones I enjoy painting the most.

CalleArte: Where can followers find more about your work and upcoming events?

José Carlos: They can follow me on my social media, where I post updates about exhibitions, projects, and news about my work, and visit my website.
