Sisay: January’s Guest of the Month

In this edition of “Encounters with Talent”, we have the honor of presenting Sisay, a visionary whose career embodies the perfect fusion of technological innovation, social activism, and artistic expression. His passion for social justice and commitment to democratizing art have given rise to a project that is transforming the landscape of contemporary art.

Born in Angola and educated in Marketing and Advertising in Brazil, Sisay was a pioneer in the technological revolution of internet access in Latin America. He led projects such as IG, the world’s first “free” internet portal, as well as innovative platforms like “Cade” and “Donde”, which paved the way for search engines that decades later inspired giants like Google.

After moving to Spain, Sisay found in art a new way to channel his creativity and values, profoundly influenced by his partner and his connection to essential human themes. As a visual artist, his work addresses issues such as the African diaspora, historical memory, and cultural resistance, using techniques and materials that reflect his environmental and social commitment.

Today, Sisay is the soul behind CalleArte+, a disruptive platform that challenges the norms of the elitist art market. CalleArte+ opens doors for emerging artists, offering an inclusive space where talent and creativity are the only requirements, eliminating economic and social barriers.

In this interview, Sisay invites us to learn about his inspiring vision for the future of contemporary art, his personal motivations, and his commitment to a fairer cultural model, where artists, collectors, and the public share a truly transformative experience.

CalleArte+: Sisay, your Life Has Traveled Different Paths. What Unites your Experiences in Technology and Art?

Sisay: The connection is democratization. In Brazil, I worked to make internet access available to everyone with projects like IG and “Cade”. When I approached art, I realized that the barriers were similar: economic and elitist. My goal in both fields has been to break down these barriers so that people have access to tools, knowledge, or, in this case, art.

CalleArte+: how Would You Describe your Evolution from the Technological World to the Artistic one?

Sisay: It was a natural evolution. Although technology was my focus, I always had a latent interest in visual expression. My arrival in Spain and my connection with my partner, an incredible artist, allowed me to rediscover that facet. In art, I found a more human way to express my values and commitment to social justice.

CalleArte+: What Role Does Social Justice Play in your Artistic Work?

Sisay: It’s the core of my work. I address topics such as the African diaspora, historical memory, and inequality, not only to make them visible but also to connect people with these realities. I believe that art can be a bridge between communities and a tool to question unjust systems.

CalleArte+: why Did You Choose Materials like Recycled Cardboard and Acrylic Ink for your Works?

Sisay: Recycled cardboard has a deep symbolism for me. It’s a humble material that is often discarded but can be transformed into something powerful. Using it reflects my commitment to sustainability and the idea of giving value to what others might ignore, both in art and in society.

CalleArte+: CalleArte+ is Revolutionizing Access to Contemporary Art. How Did the Idea Come about?

Sisay: The idea was born from observing how many talented artists were excluded because they couldn’t pay exorbitant fees or didn’t have connections in the art world. I wanted to create a space where talent was the only requirement. That’s how CalleArte was born, an inclusive platform that puts emerging artists at the center of the scene.

CalleArte+: What Challenges Did You Face when Founding CalleArte?

Sisay: Many. From lack of resources to resistance from traditional art sectors. But the biggest challenge was changing the mindset of artists and the public, making them see that a more accessible and fair model is possible. The positive response we’ve received confirms that we’re on the right track.

CalleArte+: how Do You Envision the Future of CalleArte+?

Sisay: I see CalleArte+ as a global reference for inclusion in contemporary art. We want to keep growing, offering more tools for artists, organizing physical and virtual fairs, and creating a democratic market where art is accessible to everyone, not just a privileged few.

CalleArte+: What Role Does Technology Play in CalleArte+’s Model?

Sisay: Technology is fundamental. It allows us to reach a global audience and provide accessible tools to artists. From virtual stores to immersive exhibitions, we use technology not as an end, but as a means to eliminate barriers.

CalleArte+: What Message Do You Want to Convey to Emerging Artists Struggling to Make Their Way?

Sisay: First, to believe in their talent. Second, to seek platforms and communities that value their work, like CalleArte+. And finally, to never stop creating. Art has the power to change perceptions and transform societies, and every work counts.

CalleArte+: What Would You Say to the Public about the Importance of Supporting Emerging Art?

Sisay: Emerging art is the most authentic reflection of our time. By supporting it, we’re not only boosting talent, but also building a more diverse and inclusive society. Moreover, we’re investing in unique stories that can inspire future generations.

Considerations

CalleArte+ is not just a project, it’s a statement of principles: art should be accessible, inclusive, and authentic. Under Sisay’s leadership, this space has shown that it’s possible to break down the barriers of elitism and return art to those who create and enjoy it. Each exhibition, fair, or collaboration is another step towards a fairer, more transparent, and democratic art market.

Sisay is not just an artist, but a bridge between different worlds: technology, art, and social justice. At CalleArte+, his vision continues to inspire and challenge the norms of the art market.

For artists, CalleArte+ is a unique opportunity to showcase their talent without the usual restrictions of the sector. For collectors, it’s the place to find authentic works that reflect effort and creativity, far from the speculation of the traditional market. And for the public, it’s a space to enjoy art freely and closely, connecting with the very essence of artistic expression.

Be part of CalleArte+! Together we can transform the landscape of contemporary art and build a future where creativity and humanity are the true protagonists.
